and what exactly will they find there???
I guess they will bring some rocks back, just like Americans did couple of dacades ago.

Space technology should be put to better use like putting up satellites for communications and weather forcasting...

What's the point in reinventing the wheel?

You can reinvent the wheel only when u have invented the wheel before.
Its a technology that they dun have so for them to "reinvent" it is fine i guess.

re: and what exactly will they find there???
There will probably be some red faces in Washington if the Chinese don't find the American flag allegedly placed there all those decades ago. Having said that, they would probably just use a PR spin story (eg. "it must have floated away!") to cover their tracks.

but we can't do it now
We can't even put the shuttle back into orbit. We would have to reinvent the wheel and spend the equivalent amount as Apollo to get back to the moon. Where are all our rocket scientists today?

Apollo was a heck of a lot more than just about rocks. It advanced astronomy, medicine, geology, electronics and computers. nearly everything we take for granted these days would be decades behind if not for the technology leap of the space program.

Embarassingly languid timetable
I'm sure they thought they were being modestly conservative with this estimate, but it's just an embarassment to their own cause to imply that they can't get to the moon in 18 years--the US did it in 7, JFK announcing his plans when we hadn't actually built any hardware more sophisticated than a Redstone booster with Liberty Bell 7 on top. Even Denmark could put a man on the moon in less than 18 years if it wanted to...
