Evergreen Technologies announced today that it will offer notebook PC owners an option to upgrade systems with 486 processors to Pentium-class 586 chips.

Evergreen said an upgraded IBM ThinkPad 701C runs twice as fast as the original system. Such an upgrade, with a 586 processor and 16MB of additional RAM, costs $569.

The upgrades will be available for 486 portables from most major manufacturers, including Acer, AST, Canon, Compaq, Dell, Digital, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, NEC, Texas Instruments, and Toshiba.

Evergreen's technicians will install the upgrades, with laptops picked up and returned by Federal Express within 72 hours. A one-week turnaround option is also available.
