Ericsson adds R&D unit in China

Ericsson on Thursday announced plans to set up a research unit in Nanjing, China, to develop time division synchronous CDMA products. The center is likely to deploy 50 research workers. Ericsson said it is working with local companies and the government to prepare them for 3G rollout. The company already has R&D centers in major Chinese cities including Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Qingdao and Shanghai.

The TD-SCDMA standard competes with the European standard W-CDMA (wideband code division multiple access) and the American CDMA2000 standard. China is the world's biggest mobile market, with nearly 350 million subscribers.
