EU backs Nokia standard for mobile TV

European Commission says setting preferred standard would give the industry a boost, but mobile operators said Brussels was acting too quickly.

It's different if the standard came from an EU company

Not suprising that a vendor-driven standard flies right through if it comes from an EU-based vendor. Of course if it was driven by a North American vendor it would be another story.

Nokia gave away part of the research to
the DVB group that has accepted it. It doesn't
matter that it is a European company because the process is open to anybody. Nokia has had a long history of building set-top boxes and TV:s. DVB/T/S/C/H are standards recognized in whole world but in the US, DVB-S is an notable exception and recognized all over the world.

Qualcomm(mediaflo) and many others joined the party later.

And I say it's a good thing...

While I am not an expert on the standard, I agree with what was said in the story: selecting *something* is better than having a battle between standards (like what we've seen with HD DVD and Blu-Ray).

That said, one does have to raise a very serious question: given the movement toward IP-based systems and the promise that technologies like mobile WiMAX might be able to offer megabits of wireless bandwidth (and I've been told as much as 45Mbps), then how important will it be to have a single video transmission standard? One could use any number of applications to access content. Like with the Internet today, anybody could potentially be a video broadcaster.

Perhaps this will fill a void until that time?

EU Single Standard will help Mobile TV in Asia

The adaptation of a single standard for mobile TV in the EU is likely to be a key driver for the growth of this very promising service. The multiple standards had been leading the operators into blind alleys with inadequate handsets available in the market to target. A single standard should change all this as much as GSM did.
