Domain registrar contests frauds

Afilias, the registry for domain names ending with .info, says it has started contesting suspected fraudulent claims to trademarked names of the new top-level Web addresses. The group, a coalition of 18 domain-name sellers, has submitted more than 700 challenges to those it believes falsely registered trademarked names, such as www.books.info, during a special preregistration period for .info.

Up to one-fourth of the names given during that period may have used false information, according to a study. During the review process, overseen by the World Intellectual Property Organization, registrants will have to give proof of their valid domain names to maintain ownership.
