High court to hear sex offender case

February 19, 2002
The Supreme Court has agreed to consider a state law that requires the posting of information about sex offenders on the Internet.

The high court said Monday that it will hear arguments over Connecticut's "Megan's Law," a measure named after Megan Kanka, a New Jersey girl who was killed by a sex offender. Under the law, the addresses, names and photos of registered sex offenders must be posted in a state database available online.

People search the database by entering information such as a ZIP code or the name of a town. All states have some version of the system.

However, Connecticut's registry was challenged by a convicted sex offender who claimed he was not dangerous. A federal appeals court sided with the man, saying sex offenders in the state are entitled to a hearing to determine whether they still represent a threat before their names are placed in the registry.

The Supreme Court will now decide whether to uphold that ruling and will hear arguments on the matter during its fall term. The court already has agreed to hear a similar case involving Alaska's "Megan's Law."

do sex offender's belong on the web site?
imagine having your very young daughter sexually assaulted by a family memeber... imagine having this offender plea bargain from 4 counts of agg. sexual assault, 4 counts of sexual assault, and 4 other lesser charges, to 1 count of sexual assault... imagine this offender who totally and forever changed not only your childs life but the whole entire families lives... he is sentenced to time serve(39) days and 364 days in jail (this sentence was combined with an unrelated burglary charge) and a sentence to register under Megans Law... i felt this was the only true justice from the whole ordeal. Now imagine the offender being able to remove himself from the Megans law web site somehow!!!!!!!!!! i was never notified of this change of status. No one will even discuss this with me. I'm told it's all confidential!!!!!!! Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? Now criminals can override a sentence handed down from a Judge!!! I need help!!! I was almost over this while ordeal (as much as possible) until this offender started calling my home and harassed my family!!! EVEN THEN none of the authorities would help me very easily. where is the justice in the judicial system? i will find out, i've made it my mission!!!
