Digital rolls out Net lineup

Digital Equipment (DEC) today introduced new Internet business solutions targeted at Internet service providers (ISPs), corporate intranets, and Internet commerce.

The following Internet products and solutions were unveiled by Digital and its representatives at the Internet World trade show:

Out-of-the-box solutions based on Digital's 64-bit AlphaServer systems. Three new AlphaServer models are available with enhanced system management and clustering capabilities: the new AlphaServer 300 4/266 value server, the high-capacity AlphaServer 1000A 5/400, and the high-performance AlphaServer 4100 5/400 SMP system. Pricing begins at $6,995; Plus options start at $9,090; dual-node cluster packages start at $29,310.

The AlphaServer for Intranet Search, the first hardware/software solution based on the AltaVista search engine. It includes the AltaVista Search Intranet Private eXtention software, the AlphaServer 4000 5/400 64-bit RISC system, and the 64-bit Digital Unix operating system. The solution is available now and is priced at $73,840.

Internet solutions and programs for ISPs. This will be comprised of programs such as ISP Startup, a high-availability platform for delivering Internet services and the ISP Expertise Center, a "one-stop" source for ISPs providing application integration and technical assistance, Digital said.

Web partnerships for Internet business solutions. This includes an agreement with Netscape that supplies the Netscape SuiteSpot and Commercial Applications for Digital Unix AlphaServer systems, and an agreement with Microsoft that supplies Merchant Server, Microsoft's Electronic Commerce solution for Digital Intel and Alpha-based servers. This also includes an agreement with Oracle and Digex. This partnership with Oracle and Digex includes Oracle's Interofficenet, which is Oracle's Internet-based groupware product running on AlphaServers.

Multimedia entertainment data over the Internet. Digital's Networked Entertainment Technology and Internet Business Group teams will join with such Digital partners as Animation House, ITV.Net and InterWorld to demonstrate technologies, products, and services for producing and delivering multimedia entertainment data over the Internet. Featured demonstrations will include live wireless Netcasts of convention activities, streaming audio and video segments, and next-generation multiplayer interactive video games.
