- what would the keys do to the AA? the only thing that comes to mind is that some electricity might be transferred over to the keys. not necessarily a bang...

In reality though any portable device that contains batteries is subject to meltdown, not necessarily to the extent shown on the Dell laptop fire but still dangerous.
Just the plain-jane alkaline battery can cause damage and possible fire. If you don't believe me then just take a fresh "AA" battery and drop it in your pants pocket with a pocket full of keys.
If you were fool enough to do it you'd never do it again.
