Defending my protectionist stance

Last modified:March 16, 2004, 2:21 PM PST
In response to the Perspectives column written by Charles Cooper, "Offshore is in--get used to it":

At 53, I have seen that legislation works. Reference the auto industry situation that this country had with cheap imports. Maybe it wasn't for the best, because competition tends to make for better products. But the American auto industry managed to survive.

Not everyone can be a programmer or a highly paid spokesman for the information technology industry! All the training in the world is not going to put food in American children's bellies, if their parents can't find work. You give me a solution that doesn't take 20 years, and I will back off my protectionist stance. But I don't really expect you to understand.
