Cray signs two supercomputing customers

Cray announced two customers for two supercomputer designs on Thursday. The Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center will buy a Red Storm system with a $9.7 million National Science Foundation grant, while the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics in Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta), India, bought a 96-processor XD1 system.

Both the Red Storm and XD1 systems use large numbers of Advanced Micro Devices' Opteron processor linked with customized communications processors, but the Red Storm design is typically used in more powerful systems.
