Compaq readies handheld PC

As Microsoft (MSFT) goes, so goes Compaq Computer (CPQ).

After months of rumors, Compaq announced today that it would develop a handheld device for the latest Microsoft operating system, the Windows CE platform for handheld computers. The device will be an extension of a PC desktop in a smaller package, allowing customers to take important data on the road without carrying a full-featured laptop computer.

Compaq said the system will include integrated support for a variety of PIMs (personal information managers), email packages, word processing, and spreadsheet applications, as well as a standard Internet browser.

The product will compete with similar devices like Apple Computer's Newton. Compaq's PC companion product will be available in North America by the end of this year. The product will be rolled out worldwide in 1997.

Pricing and packaging details have not been announced.
