Commerce Department names privacy officer

The Commerce Department said Tuesday that Dan Caprio, currently a deputy assistant secretary for technology policy, will become its chief privacy officer. Caprio had worked as a top aide to Federal Trade Commissioner Orson Swindle and previously had been a lobbyist for KPMG Peat Marwick as well as a House and Senate staffer.

Commerce Secretary Donald Evans said in a statement that in his new role, Caprio will "oversee all departmental activities related to the development and implementation of federal privacy laws, policies and practices." Appointing privacy officers is something of a trend, with the Department of Homeland Security choosing former DoubleClick executive Nuala O'Connor Kelly.
