Cisco Systems said Thursday that it has completed the acquisition of privately held start-up Riverhead Networks. The deal, announced last month and valued at about $39 million in cash, is expected to plug some holes in the intrusion-prevention technology offered by the San Jose, Calif., networking giant. Riverhead, of Cupertino, Calif., has been making devices designed to protect corporate and service provider networks from distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.
In a DDoS attack, networks are hit with millions of packets, which overwhelms servers and routers and can cause significant downtime and lost productivity. Riverhead's technology is meant to detect these events quickly and help mitigate the damage.
