China No. 2 in Web population

China has the second-largest number of Web surfers behind the United States, according to a new study by research firm WebSideStory. Surfers from China made up 6.63 percent of all global Internet traffic in July, followed by Japan, which accounted for 5.24 percent.

As more people outside the United States go online, the percentage of total surfers who are American is declining. The United States accounted for 42 percent of all traffic in July, down from 45.6 percent in January. The United Kingdom and Canada rounded out the field for July, accounting for 3.9 percent each of global Internet traffic.
