Cabletron leans on hardware buys

Cabletron Systems has big plans for this week's networking summit in Atlanta, underscoring the bets the company has made with a slew of recent purchases.

The networking equipment provider is leaning heavily on recently acquired hardware this week to update its portfolio, as previously reported. The moves are highlighted by new wide area connections for the company's SmartSwitch Router device, a technology expected to serve as the core for the company's corporate customer efforts going forward.

Among the items also included in the rollout are:

New equipment targeted at branch office connections to the Net and small office networking. New 500 series SmartSwitch Routers are intended for remote offices needing connections to headquarters and the Web. The new equipment will roll out in December of this year. An accompanying line of 100 and 200 series small office routers targeted at small businesses will ship next month.

New support for remote access connections within the company's SmartSwitch 2000, 6000, and 9000 models. The new module includes interfaces for dial-up, integrated services digital network (ISDN), and routing functions. The new additions will roll out early next year.

An upgrade to the company's management software for asynchronous transfer mode networks. The Specturm ATM Services Manager application, which is shipping now with prices starting at $10,625, allows an administrator to implement quality-of-service provisioning of bandwidth and schedule accounting and billing functions across a wide array of equipment.

The variety of new and updated hardware and software is rolling out as part of this week's Networld+Interop networking industry trade show.
