Boosts to Net broadcasting

CompuServe, as well as Concentric Network and Bloomberg, announced separate deals today that show the growing popularity of delivering radio and television content to PCs via the Net.

CompuServe launched a product called CompuServe Interactive Radio that lets Netizens hear celebrities and experts discuss hot topics. It is part of the company's new Web-based online service, dubbed "C," that will be rolled out later this month. CSI members can interact with the show's host and each other during a broadcast. The first program will feature talk-radio host Eliot Stein.

Concentric Network and Bloomberg, meanwhile, struck a deal to broadcast Bloomberg's TV content via the Net. Until now, Bloomberg's 24-hour news channel has been distributed through cable channels. The product is expected to launch in January. Microsoft and Compaq also will help provide the technology needed for the venture.

The new desktop service will be demonstrated at the Internet World trade show in New York. Concentric Network will provide Web hosting for the channel.

Despite their well-known brands as well as the growing popularity of broadcasting via the Net, both companies face stiff competition in this market. It comes from media giants such as Time Warner as well as Internet companies.
