Bill set to ban Net gambling

A House committee has passed anti-terrorist funding legislation that includes an amendment that would ban Internet gambling. The House Financial Services Committee, chaired by Rep. Michael Oxley, R-Ohio, passed the bill by a vote of 62-1.

The legislation includes provisions to bolster efforts to detect terrorist funding by strengthening safeguards at borders, banks and businesses. The committee also accepted an amendment to the bill that includes a provision that would ban Internet gambling. The section would prohibit a gambling business from accepting bank instruments such as credit cards, electronic fund transfers and checks in connection with unlawful Internet gambling.
