Apple Computer has scheduled a special event for next week, fueling speculation that the company could be ready to introduce an updated model of its iPod digital music player.

In an invitation to the event, Apple said only that "Steve Jobs, Bono and The Edge invite you to a special event." Bono and The Edge are members of the band U2, whose song "Vertigo" is featured in an Apple commercial and is also the top-selling song at Apple's iTunes Music Store.

An Apple representative declined to comment on the event, which is slated for Oct. 26 at 10 a.m. PDT at San Jose's California Theater.

Rumors have been swirling that Apple is readying a color-screen version of its iPod with an ability to display photos as well as play music. The company has also pledged to expand its iTunes music store to more European countries sometime this month and has yet to announce the move.

Among the sources of speculation was a report from Macintosh rumor site ThinkSecret that Apple would introduce a "U2-edition" iPod, which would come preloaded with the band's catalog, potentially linked with exclusive online access to the band's upcoming new album through the iTunes store.

Others have speculated that a flash memory-based iPod could be on the way, which would allow the company to sell a cheaper version of its best-selling music player. Jobs has previously said flash-based devices did not hold enough music, but capacity has increased substantially in the past few years.

Sales of the iPod have continued to grow at a strong clip, topping 2 million for the quarter ended Sept. 25.

Although the iPod has continued to command the lion's share of the digital-music player market, there has been no shortage of new competition. This month alone, Dell, Archos and Virgin Electronics all have announced devices intended to take on the iPod Mini.

CNET News.com's John Borland contributed to this report.

Talk of a New iPod
I betcha the new iPod will have a built in camera and instant messaging capability as well as the screen to view pictures.

Maybe even have the ability to send pictures to and stream music to other iPod users sharing photos and songs within a network.

It should also have recording and playback capabilities. That way you could talk or sing into the iPod, save the audio as a file, and stream it to a friend with an iPod to share your recording. That would be so cool.

iPod to stream music to airtunes...
I bet, and I would wager alot on this one, that the new iPod will
be compativle with Apple's Airport Express w/airtunes. That
would be a natural outflow of the current software and hardware
that Apple now has. I could live without a color screen...
However, I wish that the new iPod would have some ability to
work with the calendar and other "PDA" functions. I use it as my
PDA, but dislike the one dimensional use that it now has. Hey
Mr. Jobs, if you are listening...

Yes!
An Apple will say they invented it! What originality they have! Look we put album and photo capabilities into our player. No ones else has that! LOL! Hey - we make the ipod into a PDA..we call it ipda. :) Ok, enough apple bashing.

Heres a better player in my opinion.

Best looking, the most options, best sounding. And just think, you can play ANY music on it. What a concept! Choice!

Of course these are my opinions. It seems the majority of music player type people like the ipod. So it must be the best. Right? Hmmm.

A few misconceptions
Let me respond to the previous three comments by clearing up
some misconceptions (one from each comment)

- Recording and playback capabilities: iPods already have these
features, via third-party add-ons, such as the Griffin iTalk

- "iPod would have some ability to work with the calendar and
other "PDA" functions" : iPod already integrates with calendars
and contacts, via vCalendar, iCalendar and vCard features

- Archos Gemini: does not play "ANY" music format files. It only
plays 3 types of files: MP3, WMA, and WAV. It does not playback
AIFF, Ogg Vorbis, or Audible, just to name a few.
