Apple cuts sales jobs

Apple Computer has cut an undisclosed number of workers in the past week as it looks to make changes to its sales force.

The Cupertino, Calif.-based company confirmed the job cuts in a statement, but a representative would not specify how many.

"While some sales positions have been reassigned or eliminated during the normal course of business, the overall headcount in our sales and retail groups is growing," Apple said in a statement.

The Mac maker has chosen not to make widespread job cuts, unlike PC rivals such as Hewlett-Packard, Dell Computer, Compaq Computer and Gateway. In May, the company did cut a small number of jobs in its iServices consulting unit.

Apple said it has been adding staff both to fill its new retail stores and as part of an effort to put Apple employees inside some CompUSA stores. Apple also said it has recently hired several new sales executives.
