The release of Geronimo creates another freely available open-source alternative to closed-source Java application servers, a product category which many industry executives contend should be a low-cost commodity. Java application servers run Java programs, such as serving up Web pages. The Geronimo software adheres to the Java 2 Enterprise Edition 1.4 standard. The Apache development group intends to pursue the most current Java server software specification, according to Geronimo project members.
