Akamai to buy Netli

Web content delivery network Akamai Technologies said on Monday that it has reached an agreement to buy Netli, an 8-year-old company that has built a service for speeding up Internet applications.

Akamai said it intends to incorporate Netli's services into its current offerings, which are used to improve performance of applications that run over the Internet, such as those used by video-sharing sites. Netli developed a protocol to optimize the transmission of data over wide-area networks. Netli raised $47 million in venture funding. Akamai said that it will purchase the equity in Netli for about 3.2 million shares of Akamai stock but did not indicate the purchase price.
