Acer taps AMD's Turion processor

Acer America, as expected, will become one of the first brand name PC makers to offer Advanced Micro Devices' Turion 64 processor in a notebook. Acer will offer the chip, which arrived earlier this month, in new Aspire 5000 and Aspire 5020 notebooks, created for small businesses and small home offices, respectively.

The Aspire 5000 will pair the Turion with 15-inch or 15.4-inch screens, while the 5020 will offer more in the way of multimedia features, including a DVD burner and S-Video out, allowing it to show movies on a television screen. The Aspire 5000 will come out later this month, while the 5020 will arrive in late April. Pricing for the machines has not yet been set, Acer said in a statement.

It is possible that AMD gives Intel some real competition as athlon64 did for the desktop PC's with Intel P4. This could shave off another 100-200 dollars off some of the middle order laptops that are selling just becuase it has a 'centrino' cpu monopoly.
