Acer goes wide with new notebook

March 2, 2004
Acer on Monday announced a new Ferrari notebook that features a 64-bit chip.

The Ferrari 3400 uses Advanced Micro Devices' Athlon 64 processor 3000+, as well as AMD's technology for extended system battery life, Acer said. An optional port replicator is also available.

The computer is available in gray and Ferrari red, Acer said. Pricing starts at $2,299.

As it attempts to re-establish itself in the U.S. notebook market, the Taiwanese computer maker has introduced other new models recently, including, in April, the Aspire 1710, a notebook with a 17-inch screen.

The Ferrari 3400 comes preloaded with the Windows XP Professional operating system. The device weighs 6.5 pounds, Acer said.

Other features include 512MB of DDR333 SDRAM, which can be upgraded to 2GB, and an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics card with 128MB DDR (double data rate) video memory. The laptop is Wi-Fi ready and has four USB 2.0 ports, a Giga LAN connection and Bluetooth support. It features an 80GB removable hard drive, a slot-loading DVD optical drive and a reader for optional cards, such as multimedia cards and secure digital cards.

buying the latest and greatest is all very well... but it's the follow up that makes it sweet. I have had abominable SUPPORT from ACER for their top of the range notebook. I personally will never buy ACER again and I actively suggest to other people.. don't buy ACER. If anything goes wrong you're screwed.
