ATI ships 12 million GameCube chips

Graphics chipmaker ATI Technologies announced Tuesday it has shipped the 12th million "Flipper" chip for Nintendo's GameCube console. Besides graphics processing, the custom-designed Flipper handles audio, input/output and other functions for the GameCube.

Game consoles have become an important new market for graphics chipmakers, especially as PC sales have stalled. ATI rival Nvidia derives a significant chunk of its revenue from the custom-graphics chip it makes for Microsoft's Xbox.
