As many as 100,000 Net phone subscribers who haven't formally acknowledged 911 limitations could be cut off next week.

E911 Notices as SPAM
by rsatter August 25, 2005 4:20 PM PDT
I recently got the required notice. Took a quick look and deleted the email. It was not until I got the second email clearly saying I would be disconnected that I responded.

I wonder how many people saw the email and deleted it as spam or a privacy notice that hits the trash can. Most notices are just that a FYI not a you must respond to keep your service.

Paternalistic Government at its Worse
by p.shearer August 28, 2005 5:58 PM PDT
Ok? we are scared the sometime might not understand their VOIP 911 service so we cut off what may be there only means of communication in an emergency? That?s makes as much sense as executing children who have not been immunized because they might get sick.

Here is what really chaps me concerning this. The FCC commissioners are unelected and yet there "policy" decisions have the weight of law. Its strange I never heard about this fourth branch of government in the constitution.

two tiers
by AlecWest September 1, 2005 3:10 AM PDT
If the FCC needs to mandate anything, it should be a two tier service level - BASIC (no 911) and ENHANCED (e911 compliant). The misunderstandings, lawsuits, and deadlines we now see today are the result of the FCC's inability to tackle this problem early on ... leaving a confusing and variable "middle-ground." And, they KNEW it was coming. Some VoIP providers are already e911 compliant. A 2-tier scenario would allow market pressure, not mandates, to determine who offers what. And consumers wouldn't have cut-offs to worry about, they'd have "options" to consider.

Story: FCC extends 911 deadline for Net phones
Oh my! What a wonderful idea. Either set up mandatory 911 info on your VOIP Service or lose your service altogether. What would you rather have in an emergency; a phone that works (but not automatically for 911 identification) or a dead phone with no dial tone? Shows you how intelligent the political appointees to the FCC are. Also, dont forget the brilliant politicans that appoint them. We are stupid enough to elect 'em so I guess we deserve nothing better.
