My experience
by alexei_roudnev September 27, 2004 10:53 AM PDT
I tested it some time ago; then system was brought back by a few engineers, then by a few sales, and it survived here.

What I found during testings:
- protocl is well adopted to the modern wold of firewalls and NAT's. It works thru all our environment (all we need to have is outbound UDP connections), and it worked correctly, using INTRANET when communicated inside one office and using INTERNET to work between offices (bypassing our VPN's, which is good thing because VPN and VoIP are not good cimbination);
- It uses cryptography for the voice by default, which is a good thing;

There are few problems, anyway:
- (main one) - no VAD functionality, so system sends packets even when I do not talk. It makes it unacceptable on the big scale and for the conferences;
- (generic one) system must be brought into the hardware.

But it is very effective competitor to SIP. It it was created 1 year earlier, it should win; for now, it is 50 / 50 chance. Ease to use, NAT transparency, default cryptography all makes it very attractive.

In comparation, no one SIP system worked without heavy configuration and adaptation.

Should be open-source
by dmehus September 27, 2004 10:55 AM PDT
A technology so revolutionary as Skype should be open-source, if its founders really want to change the Internet telephony industry. Otherwise, they create the solid image that they are money-hungry, greedy pricks.

I won't see them in a positive light or as "visionaries" until they decide to make the peer-to-peer VoIP telephony technology open-source.

Cheers,
Doug

You're so right ... it would be fantastic ... So why don't you code it yourself and then release it as freeware ?
Ooooh, I see, you're not a coder, just an angry leecher who think WE owe you everything ...

by mjugend September 27, 2004 3:38 PM PDT
When you mention in the 6th paragraph that: "And the software works only on PCs and a handful of niche devices--not regular phone handsets", you are wrong, there is Skype por Mac as well, go to www.skype.com and check it out!

You miss the point that skype works on ".. PCs and a handful of
niche devices--not regular phone handsets". The author says
that you can't use the software with just any PHONE. Keep in
mind that Apple computers are still Personal Computers.

SKYPE is NOT the ONLY game in town.

You think you have seen it all... WRONG...

SKYPE is NOT the only game in town...

I found a service that are more innovative than any of the other VoIP services combined.
FREE PC-2-Telephone in the US and Canada and naturally PC-2-PC worldwide.
It's new and it's explosive. This service is a marketers dream come thru and yes they are looking for reps., in the US and Canada. Check it out, download the dialer, wait a few days and get the real thing but at least for now "go check it out".
This is not greed but smart thinking and it's a win, win situation for everyone.
