Comments on: IRS eyes Net phone taxes

A tax first enacted in 1898 to pay for the Spanish-American War might be reinterpreted to apply to Internet phone calls.

FET has always applied to VoIP

I advise many folks providing several kinds of IP services that have a voice application. We have been telling them for several years that -- unlike many state sales taxes -- the FET clearly applies to VoIP. The definition is different and much broader inclusive than those found in the Communications Act and state counterparts that subject a telecommunications service to economic regulation.

FET and VOIP

I am a CPA in Michigan doing some research for a client who has just recently started to provide VOIP services to customers. I read your response to an article in which you indicated you that you advise clients re: FET and VOIP. I was wondering if I could get some feedback from you on this issue. Thank you.

Go ahead, tax VOIP....people will still continue to use voice to chat over Yahoo IM, AOL IM, MSN, Trillian, ICQ...you gonna tax that?

You can't stop it completely...what a bunch of idiots.
