I say light a hot fire under the rears of those ISP's that survive off of the ordinary, by providing it for free. If an ISP won't innovate, won't push limits, let it die.
Qwest, I'm looking at you.

Or just invite some Korean ISP over hear to show them how its done. It's not about the industry. It's about the people.

Hmm, I thought it was about...

...letting private industry handle stuff like this, so they taxpayers won't be *forced* to pay for something they probably won't use. I wonder if the good citizens of Minneapolis are getting their money's worth out of this fancy new wi-fi network.
Is this a press release?

Is this a press release or news story? Why are the only quotes from people with vested interests in hyping muni Wi-Fi? CNET couldn't find even a single actual user of the network to describe how it actually worked or didn't work for them?

Suprised it didn't overload

With the U of M and other dorms and apartments in that region
I'm very suprised the wi-fi didn't get bogged down. However, it
wasn't only the cell towers that were maxed out, the land
interchanges were also overloaded, even in rural districts. I had
to call one district by VOIP to get a connection that evening. I
knew cell towers would be in heavy demand so I refused to go
cell to cell, but a rural land district being maxed out??? That
blew my breaker.

I remember another land line district that had to expand their
interchange routers (2 prefixes) due to almost DAILY getting the
message "all circuits are busy, please try your call again later".

I know of two other cities (smaller) in Mn that also have City
wide WiFi. Smart option. Chaska did it as did another city.
