So what anti-virus do they use?

So what anti-virus do they use? No mention of that in their documentation.

If they developed anti-virus technology in-haouse, that itself would be much bigger news than their scanning of email!

They've been secure for some time now.

In IE click File/Send/Link by email to your gmail account. It won't get to you, because they bounce every e-mail that might have some malicious intent. You can't even send e-mail from your ISP account to your gmail account containing possible malicious attachments. I often save links in the manner and have to strip out the attached link. It's important yet I don't want to clutter up my Favorites with another memory jogging link.

Gmail is still in beta. They don't have to do everything older services do.
