Security?

1) National ID already exists ... linking state IDs weakens data security

2) Existing law not enforced enabled 9/11 attackers to remain in US

3) Federal Agencies routinely break the law. The FBI has stated that the criminal violations of Federal Law committed by FBI agents will be handled as violations of FBI regulations. Food for thought here--Why are FBI agents exempt from prosecution for violations of Federal Law?

4) President Bush has declared that any order he gives that violates US Law is not subject to the law & is therefore legal. Note that the Oath taken by the President requires he uphold and defend the laws of the US.

You truly want to hand the Feds even more control without oversight????

You guys'll let any arb fool buy a gun, but an I.D. card is a big freakout? My country does it the other way - everyone has an I.D. but it's harder to get a gun.

I have a better idea - how about psychometrics for your next President? If we have to have them for a basic job, I think the top guy or gal should be checked out.

I've already got an ID - A valid US Passport

I've got my national/international ID. It's my passport. What else is needed? It's accepted all around the world. And the system has been in place for decades. My 2 cents worth.......

Passport as ID...

It is easy for some people to say get a "passport" and you'll have
the ID you need.

Guess what?

Not all can afford the High Fee of getting a passport.

Not all can find the documentation and information needed to
get a passport.

Passports are not a solution.

Passports costly?

Hmm... That's a supprise to me. If you can obtain a certified copy of your birth certificate (Here is a hint, if you were born in the US within the past 40 years you can readily order a copy online for about $40) it runs about $97 for the passport application fee, yeilding a passport for about $137. yes, it is slightly steep, but it is good for quite some time, and $137 isn't a huge chunk out of most peoples budgets if they can plan for it well in advance.

>>>Not all can find the documentation and information needed to get a passport.<<<

Here in New Jersey my wife just visited the motor vehicle office to renew her driver's license. The NJMVS requires you to bring five or six pieces of separate NJ state-accepted identifications JUST FOR A DRIVER'S LICENSE! NJMVS Fee: $24.

God knows what the feds would require you to bring to the new "Federal National ID Service Office" for a new, fancy National ID, to prove you are who you say you are. DNA?

It might end up that you'll need to bring MORE pieces of ID once the fed get thru with their "identification requirements". Btw, passport:$67.

AND, who said the national ID wasn't going to cost us anything?

And passports already have RFID chips embedded in them. You basically already have a "national-id" card.

Driver's licenses are insecure national IDs
by wrroddy1949 May 12, 2007 8:39 PM PDT
I agree with everything the article says. What the article doesn't do is critique the present system. Currently, the driver's license as a secure "national" ID that is already used to enter federal buildings, board airplanes, etc. REAL ID would be an improvement on the current system.
