What "Merry-Go-Round" This Is!
by Commander_Spock May 7, 2007 5:28 AM PDT
"The move makes Dell the first major systems provider to join the Microsoft-Novell collaboration, which consists of a broad set of business and technological agreements to make their products work together better to serve corporate customers using both Linux and Windows computer servers..." With this "yet" another move by the Microsoft Corporation who will once against say to the European Commission who has threatened the U.S. based computer company with fines... "see ; we (Windows folks) have "interoperability" in the server space with the Linux folks -- so; now what, you cannot say that we don't because we now even have the Dell folks on our side to prove our point. In any case, since Windows (Code-Base OS/2) = Linux (Code-Base OS/2) = OS/2 Warp Server for eBusiness... how far is the fallen apple is expected to be from the root of the tree! What "Merry-Go-Round" This Is!

too much time on the conspiracy playground
by tylerjensen May 7, 2007 8:09 AM PDT
"Commander_Spock" has been spending too much time on the playground of conspiracy. I'm sure Microsoft with it's army of OS developers and the many Linux companies who pay developers to work on the open source OS will want to be alerted so they can RIF all those guys since the OS/2 code base will do nicely. And I'm sure IBM's board will want to know that their own uber-ubiquitous OS/2 Warp Server (tongue in cheek--for Spock"s benefit) could have saved them all that money they sunk into Linux; knowing now that it was such a colossal waste, they can fire all the executives who made such a stupid blunder. Go Big Blue!
Windows (Code-Base OS/2) = Linux (Code-Base OS/2) = OS/2 Warp???????????
by jlaustill May 7, 2007 8:11 AM PDT
Where exactly do you get that linux's codebase is os/2??? That's COMPLETELY false, linux was written from scratch to conform to the posix standard, thus loosely modeled after Unix. Windows codebase was mostly dos, os/2 wasn't released until 1987, LONG after dos and windows 1.0 had been written. Maybe you should get ur facts straight before flaming off on a board somewhere and thus putting your name on said statement for the rest of eternity :)

Have a WONDERFUL day, life is good lol.

Clueless

Why do you worship a dead OS? OS/2 was good but it is dead. Deal with it.

And no, Linux is in no way based off of OS/2. Keep dreaming.

This shows the history behind Unix and all its derivatives. A really
neat chart.

AWESOME

That's REALLY neat, printing as we speak to paste on my cubicle wall lol. AND it properly shows Linux as a branch of Minix, NOT OS/2 :)
The E85 Scenario!
by Commander_Spock May 7, 2007 8:52 AM PDT
It is just like driving a motor vehicle with an 85/15 ratio of fossil fuel and ethanol; and, then again--if one's mother is of African American descent and your father if Anglo-American, then what are you. What are the composition of you genes? Do you wanna bet the "farm" that both Windows and Linux do not have OS/2 genes (Codes) in them or your E85 gas does not have a percentage of ethanol in it? That is the point that is being made with respect to Windows and Linux!

You call forking a positive thing? It's what ruined the Unix market!

And, now Linux will follow suit, further confusing customers in need of unified support. I just have to laugh!

2nd bad move for Dell
by MSSlayer May 7, 2007 8:57 AM PDT
Picking Ubuntu for household desktops was a bad choice. openSuSE is the best consumer grade distro.

Secondly was getting in bed with MS in this crappy deal. They could have distributed SuSE without playing MS's games.

I suppose this idiotic decision is to keep Ballmer from crying and throwing chairs.

Dell needs to cut the strings that MS has on them.

And the marketplace is voting

No matter what you may think about the underlying deal, let the marketplace take hold. And, it is. These arrangements remain way more preferable than the central planning of governments.

Slackware Linux is my favorite
by RompStar_420 May 7, 2007 10:28 AM PDT
I have been using slackware linux for a very long time, it is one of the distribution that didn't sell out and while it might not have the easiest windows and the prettiest for the installion part, it does everything you would expect from a good linux distribution.

However, if you are a beginner, you might not like it, but I did learn it as a beginner, because back in 1995, there was nothing else out there.

How many people have an office pool going on how long it's going to take MS to stab Dell in the back?

Let's see...the question was posted at 10:57...oops, too late

The only un-answered question is how many millions Dell got to participate in this fraud...and how long they keep that in the face of market outrage.

The truth behind this move
by Vegaman_Dan May 7, 2007 11:22 AM PDT
The truth is that Elvis is actually coordinating this all from his space ship in orbit around Planet Conspiro.

Don't worry, we have Bigfoot and the Lochness monster on our side of defenders.

Ain't that the truth
by Seaspray0 May 7, 2007 1:50 PM PDT
How can I argue with that? Your facts are certainly indesputable and rock solid. No doubt you've beaten the punch on it being printed in that foundation of truth in professional journalism "The Weekly World News".

Bye bye to Dell, Novel (Suse) and MS
by RompStar_420 May 8, 2007 11:30 AM PDT
Could careless about any of these products now. For a long time MS was putting down Linux and wanted nothing to do with it. Then they tried like a snake to back stab them by having other companies spread FUD (that which they paid them for), then when that didn't work, they invested millions in cash to pay Novel so that they could use the Linux when all fail, as a backup plan.

Novel would be a fool to ever sell anything to MS, because they would do the same thing they did with DOS and backstab anything to make a buck.

That's their mentality for you, make a buck, lie, cheat, as long as at the end of the day you make a buck and profit builds.

No ethics what's so ever, you know that thing they teach you in college, "Ethic", you'll loose that if you get involved with them, they are like a crack dealer, don't care, as long as money is make and more pushing is made and volume build.

There is plenty of other Linux distros out there, Slackware, RedHat, Debian, Ubuntu, etc....

http://distrocenter.linux.com/

So the close pack of MS/Suse linux will never work as good as they are planning them to do, because they would have to change their behavior as they would no longer have a such a large market share, they would acctually have to become more humble and willing to change.

Humble?
by Renegade Knight May 8, 2007 12:09 PM PDT
True, MS would have to change to play in the Linux world.

My recent run in with MS was like talking to a trained monkey. No clue how to treat a customer, just follow the script and hope that I go away. It's working. I'm going away.

I feel sorry for any of the employees who may have wanted to take the time and help me with the issue that I was having with the Emeral Empire. They are the ones stuck dispensing the scripted non answers.
Sold ALL My Dell Stock
by avanabs May 8, 2007 7:06 PM PDT
Microsoft continues to dominate...it's GREAT to be an un-regulated monopoly! That said, this is another nail in the coffin of Dell, already under major pressure from the likes of HP. Fortunately for server customers, HP hasn't knuckled under this absurd agreement (yet).

I'd some hopes that when Michael took control of Dell again, they'd get back on track...guess it's not to be. I've also bought my very last Dell machine.
