DiDio and Independent are mutually-exclusive terms.

The widely discredited Laura DiDio does not *do* independent research. Given a few days, we will likely discover once again, that this, like all other "research" seen to date purporting to claim positive things about Microsoft Windows was paid for by Microsoft.

You make claims but fail to support them

Widely discredited? Prove it or close your pie hole.

Server is only part of the cost.

The problem with a MS propietary server is that it often locks
you into a MS proprietary client (Windows/IE/Office) and MS
propietary infastructure (Active Directory, Sharepoint, etc). Ka-
ching, ka-ching, ka-ching. So say goodbye to your choice, as
well as your money.

Why locked?

There are lots of options when it comes to the MS platform. 602Software offers options for Office/Email/document sharing; there is OpenOffice, Word Perfect... The list just goes on and on. From free to reasonably priced. There is no need to buy further software from Microsoft.
The ?lock?, I have often found, is the lack of understanding within a company of what they want and why. And that, quite frankly, is platform independent.
