Now I understand the real reason for MicroHoo. They have to stamp out this to protect their mega Office Product line - makes the Yahoo price look cheap.

Are you kind of joking?

Zimbra is *far* away from Google Apps. Looks like you never gave it a try.

One of my client (world leader in his domain) tested Google Apps and Zimbra before summer 2007: they abandoned Zimbra before testing it before they didn't even manage to make it work properly! While they're now thinking about going globally to Google Apps...

That was then, this is now. Zimbra 5 wasn't released until New Years 2008, and it delivers far more than Google Apps for our 200+ person international ad firm. Start with x-platform compatibility, then add that it's not just browser based, but actually syncs mail, contacts, calendars, etc, with Outlook and with the Mac's built in Aps... our tech team even uses it to sync directly with their linux boxes. If I sound enthused, it's because we came from using Exchange, which was frustrating. Anyway, I use gmail, I had an account before our firm got Zimbra, and I was actually an advocate for Google Apps until Zimbra 5 came out. Here's a feature comparison with a Zimbra hosting provider, although note that we run Zimbra ourselves:

@Oliver-m, You're right that currently, Zimbra's "apps" can't hold a candle to Google. But strategically (in other words, over the long haul) this platform could become Yahoo's (or MicroHoo's) delivery platform for a business-class online collaboration suite.

2007 feels like ten years ago. We've been using Zimbra at our company of about 100 with a Zimbra hosting provider and it's changed tremendously since then. It feels like a real application, and with Firefox 3 or Safari, it loads in moments, as opposed to gmail, which I still use, but feels like a high-end web app.
