To use these sites effectively I'd need to submit my birth date, family names, etc. It's a lot of personal information to entrust to any site. It's a leap of faith that I'm not ready to make.

Regarding how we'll make money... we have some good ideas, but I can't give away all our secrets yet ;) The page with recommended gifts is a start, more generally I think that If we can build a service that's used by families from all over the world, there will be good opportunities to offer relevant products. Will keep you posted!

@PyramidView - I totally understand your hesitation. Privacy is high priority for us, and we're trying to make sure our members feel they can trust us.
