What about a bootable version from cd
by newkidd92 October 12, 2007 8:08 AM PDT
iv been thinking about this for a while actually, and iv been thinking that it would be a great idea to create a bootable linux live cd just for web browsing. Granted, it would take longer to boot up, but it would require much less memory than regular os's... sorta like damn small linux, and would not require hardware. What do you guys think?

Check out the Mach Boot Linux distribution!! It can boot in under 10 seconds from the CD. www.machboot.com

I haven't tried it out yet so I don't know how good it is. Try it out I almost sure its for free. Although when the dude smooths out the kinks he said he might start selling it.

Cheap workstation?
by LawSchoolBound October 13, 2007 12:58 AM PDT
theoretically, does this mean you could build a workstation with no hard drive and not much ram since the operating system is so light? Because seeing as how you can do so much with just a browser now, I can see this being very helpful in say, poorer funded schools where they need computers but don't want to pay for full workstations. Just give every kid a free google account and they'll have plenty of storage space and the tools to learn basic computing.

I have been using Puppy Linux for about 4 years.

This OS small and fast, boots from CD, DVD. Flashdrive, HD.

Check it out.

Is it possible to update Firefox
by PaulKB October 13, 2007 6:12 PM PDT
A deal breaker for me is whether it is possible to update version of Firefox stored in ROM. In the advent of a new a significant new web technology should come along which an older version of Firefox could not utilize a computer with its OS and browser embedded in a chip could be reduced to an expensive doorstop.

Updating is possible

PaulKB, the onboard OS and browser can be updated. There's a Windows utility to download and flash the ROM. A Linux utility (on the board, like the OS and browser) to do so is in the works.
