There are many web based readers out there that you can use on your own server, for example Gregarius and Feed On Feeds. These will give you your own uptime reliability and let you update feeds whenever you want. I don't use Google Reader though I am heavy user of Google search engine. If RSS is an important part of your workflow, you should even consider a desktop reader like netnewswire or newsfire. Unlike google reader, you can then search through the items.

Thanks for the great post! I read Webware daily, and as a new blogger, these types of posts are really great to link to when trying to explain what an RSS feed is, for example, to some readers who may not know.

For example, I've just linked to this article on this post about why I switched from Wordpress.com to Blogger, rather than linking to Google Reader directly when I mentioned it... I'd rather my readers come here and learn what it's all about first and then click on to Reader excited to try it out! Keep up the good work.

How do I get a feed item shown in Google Reader into a Zen mp3 player?
With Opera, feed items in Google Reader automatically went into my Podcasts folder, so that I could download them.
With Firefox, this doesn't happen.
This is an elementary question, which I can't find an answer to from Google or from Firefox. Nor can I find a book on it. There doesn't seem to be a book on FF3 (or on Tbird 2.0.0.14).
What am I overlooking?
