Microsoft left the VoIP capabilities out of the latest Mac client, so unfortunately it doesn't run natively on a Mac.

I currently use the service through VMWare Fusion in Unity Mode on my MacBook Pro using either my bluetooth headset or a Microsoft Life-Chat USB headset.

Microsoft does have a Mac version of Messenger, it just doesn't have the VoIP or video parts enabled. I believe they only work if you use Windows Communication Services on a corporate network.
