Comments on: Comcast to cap monthly consumer broadband

Party seems to be over for unlimited bandwidth: In October, Comcast will begin capping usage at 250GB per month, with dire consequences for abusers.

CUMCAST i s out of there minds! what are they thinking? what drugs are they on???
I use that much up just using Vonage, that plus I watch the news and TV shows I miss... and playing my xbox 360 on line.

I am glad I have Knology they charge me a bit more for less speed 55$ for 8mbs, but they at least do not have any limits...yet and i f they are smart they will not make the same mistake CUMCAST has.

what good i s faster speed if you cant use it? I would suggest all CUMCAST users to drop your SERVICE ASAP...CUMCAST should be tought a Lesson...

I've read all the posts here and there is one missing. My girlfriend uses a phone streaming service to chat with her family. I'm sure the bandwidth for just that is low, however put that together with watching Netflix streaming movies, I also like to go to NBC and watch Heros, CBS to watch Jericho, and then there is 24. So adding them all up I will be curious to see how much data I do transfer.

A question for everyone, all these posts defintely show that people (comcast customers) are unhappy with this. Has anyone send an email to their customer support?

WOW, I am ditching comcast as soon as verizon gets it together and I can get fios. I already have constant problems with their HDTV service being incredibly bad, channels often totally garbled, and now they want to cap internet use. What about playing games and all that? This is total crap and I am gone as soon as I can.

I'm very fortunate that AT&T's U-Verse hit my neighborhood a couple of months ago. I'm going to be downloading from my Usenet service non-stop until Comcast says it is time to switch over to AT&T. :-) F'em.

This whole cap thing is ridiculous.
It's about time to dump Comcast and switch to Verizon's FIOS.

250GB is more than enough for the average user - I say this as a guy who works as a database consultant. Those complaining are the ones that are hogging a shared resource. If they want more, pay more for a business connection or dedicated T-1.

I think that everyone should file comlaints with their state bureau of consumer protection, the FCC, and the FTC. These agencies will not take action on one complaint alone, if they receive enough complaints, they will start to take action. These are legitimate complaints too!!!

This is from a company that has always lied about it capacity. This is not to protect their network, but to protect their video/tv business. Unlimited access will still be available from honest companies that actually know how to manage their network.

What are these people thinking? I'm glad I don't have their service. Bring on Verizon and AT&T. Competition will crush this kind of thing if they try it in a mixed market. It will spur it where there isn't choice now.

No ISP delivers unlimited service. They all have bandwidth limitations. DLS more so than Cable, but there is fast DSL. Either way you can only get so much data in your pipe.

Bandwidth x time = data. They already capped the bandwidth, now they capped the data, and time was always limited. No part of that equation works anymore. It's all capped.

If I were a comcast customer I'd be looking at DSL even at the slower speed. At least the DSL guys want your business.

We've already bought "unlimited" internet. How many levels of "unlimited" should there be?

If Comcast is going to provide a cap where going over it bans you for the calendar year, then they better give some kind of usage monitor! Otherwise it is way to easy to go over it without even realizing you are close. Email alerts can arrive way to late (if at all, especially if you are already near the cap that gets you cut-off for a year). I wonder if this will be 250GB for both upload and download combined as some places are doing (switching their download cap to a combined cap without telling people about it so they hit their cap faster).

So, does this mean that if I already have service with Comcast, they'll limit me to 250 Gb/month even though that wasn't in the plan when I signed up? How can they get away with this? FCC PLEASE give them a huge fine and keep them from doing this.

oh, and cnet should be concerned with this too, because if I'm limited in my use I'm going to stop visiting sites like this because the videos and such will run up my usage.

I despise Comcast. I believe this is their way of protecting their cable TV and OnDemand service. since more and more people are starting to stream video. I had an issue about a year ago that they would not resolve so I cancelled them. I ended up having to go back to them about 6 months ago and use cable, internet and phone service. I called up to cancel the phone service and told Comcast I was about to switch the others. I told them about my previous problems and was refunded an amount equivalent to my issue.

My suggestion: Call and cancel your service and let them know why. Sprint and Comcast both are horrible on the customer service side and only care when cancelling. If you are willing to leave, they start to bring out some great deals (money off your bill, etc) and are a little more contrite : )

Agreed. This is ludicrous. Time to start looking for a new carrier. As hard drives for computers keep growing in capacity, so will the need to backup all that precious material. I have over 80 GB in pictures, another 40 GB in songs, and probably another 150 GB of documents that I keep backed up by Mozy every month. This is a major turnoff for me by Comcast.

Comcast should either increase the 250GB or/and do a rollover on the cap

This is completely insane. For the average user this is not going to be a problem. 250 is a lot. Now take the not so average user, which is quickly becoming the average user now a days. What Comcast is trying to do should be and quite possibly is illegal.

They are stopping all movie on demand competition. If you want to rent a movie on demand through comcast, this is through your Cable TV usage, not internet. Now lets say I want to download a movie through my PS3, a HD movie could be as high as 8 Gig, SD 2-3. Now lets say I do this 3 time a week, plus standard internet usage, now a game demo or 2. I have just violated the usage agreement with little to no effort, but Comcast has no problem with me downloading an unlimited amount of movies via their ON Demand service, as long as they get the money.

To me this is clearly an effort to squash competition, and a stop needs to be put to this........
