This was a big 'ole mess. Not just for Apple's beloved iPhone customers, but for the rest of the Apple long time customers that don't matter to Apple anymore since they devoted all their efforts to iTunes and iPhone. .MAC has been decimated. It's been malfunctioning for days. Only this morning did webmail come back up. They've taken out a bunch of features, offered no apologies for the outage (extending membership for a free month would be minimum), and don't seem to care. The .Mac page does NOT forward to the me.com like promised, instead taking you to the "why you should buy this" page. The calendar app stalls. Luckily the hosted websites never went down, or my business would have suffered.

There was NO REASON Apple should have migrated to mobileme + released iPhone 3G worldwide + released iPhone software 2.0 all in the same 3 days. They should have known their servers couldn't handle it. iPhone software 2.0 should have been a 1 week later thing, and the .Mac-->mobileme transition should have been 1 week earlier than iPhone 3G. And worldwide iPhone 3G release should have been staggered over 3-5 days. Apple showed real lack of professionalism by trying to do all of it in under 72 hours, and it bit them, and their customers, in the butt....

Oh, and I still can't get the mobileme update to show up on any of my Leopard machines. Though finally me.com is working. But it lacks a homepage?

How come Apple has not said ONE WORD about this!? They might think its not a big deal, but if you got news organizations and web blogs with negative views about it, where is the damage control?

I would like Apple to at least give a statement on this "fubar"' launch.

My wife and I both downloaded the 2.0 update this morning, and it went without a hitch. No issues at all.

I am not sure why some of you had problems but it took me 40 minutes to update the software on my edge iPhone. First I had to upgrade my iTunes and the rest was done automatically. Worked perfectly without a glitch and I love the new offerings.

Get over it already. Cnet you need to be more responsible than a blog. They had a snafu and a bad miscalculation of how many people would hit the servers at the same time. But for God's sake this is not the end of the world. Problems have been solved. I udated 2 phones yesterday after the early day problems without a hitch. 2.0 is awesome!

"How come Apple has not said ONE WORD about this!? "

I want to know where the parents are in all of this!

"They might think its not a big deal"

It isn't

"but if you got news organizations and web blogs with negative views about it, where is the damage control?"

They don't have much credibility, look at the misleading headline for this thread.

Problems have been solved with most iPhones only. NOT with .Mac/Mobileme, the ignored group of "victims" in this who thing, who pay $99 a year and are not part of the iPhone crowd, yet are still working with a broken system days later. I didn't get email for a day. It came back, but for those on the road who may have been dependent on webmail, they could not get .mac webmail for 3+ days. Without Apple even admitting anything other than "it's taken longer than we anticipated." Gee, thanks.

Yes, what's up with MobileMe? In my case, e-mail worked fine from the get-go, calendar worked fairly well once MobileMe was up and running. However, with Contacts, my iPhone and the MobileMe web site communicate just fine, but the desktop Contacts app on my iMac does not recognize any changes made from the iPhone and/or MobileMe web site (iCal on iMac does). Is anyone else having this problem and/or know of a work around?

BTW - on Friday, upgraded iPhone Edge after retrying for several hours. Some apps are cool - many are crap - no apparent quality control checking being done by Apple. Hope this improves. Make sure you read the ratings/comments before downloading an app - they tell the real story.

Got 2.0 on Friday?? Me too. Loaded iTunes 7.7 on Thursday, and iPhone 2.0 on Friday. Already got some cool Apps. I'm not exactly an Apple fan, but all went well for me. Maybe I'm just lucky, maybe I'm good at following instructions, maybe things work better out here in the sticks.

Will probably get the 3G in the next week or two anyway, after the lines die down. Wish I could get it off the Internet from Apple like last year, engraved and all. Then again, I guess if they don't have the metal back like the first iPhone, they wouldn't work well for engraving anyway.

DON'T DOWNLOAD THE 2.0 UPGRADE

Why? Because after downloading it, I'm finding everything to run much slower. My WiFi signal has fallen from full bars to half! While this can be a coincidence, how about the following:

- moving from screen to screen on the iPhone now has a lag
- on more than one occasion, my iPhone has rebooted itself when I'm within applications (this could be a third-party app though)
- the overall "feel" isn't smooth anymore; everything is choppy from the screen transitions to the delayed sound efx.

I'm not having any of the problems you describe - wondering if perhaps you have a leaky app that has somehow corrupted some OS code on the iPhone. Perhaps it's worth deleting the app(s) and then using iTunes to restore your iPhone to its original 2.0 state.

However, after reading several of the ratings and comments in the App Store, I am convinced that there's minimal quality control being performed by Apple - looks like a liberal policy of buyer beware. Of course, as Bill Maher says, this is just my personal opinion and I could be wrong...

Work Around Found on Apple Support Site:

1) Make sure you install the MobileMe update for latest Leopard version
2) Check to see if Contacts and/or Calendar are all correct on MobileMe
3) Select MobileMe from System Preferences
4) On Sync tab, click advanced
5) Click Reset Sync Data
6) Select the data you wish to replace on your Mac with the data from MobileMe (e.g., Contacts)
7) Make sure the arrow is pointing from MobileMe to this computer
8) Click Replace and confirm

In my case, this solved the sync issues with Address Book on my iMac

So...after the massive screw ups of the iPhone launch last year, the Apple/AT&T cabal hands consumers another bitter lesson in their own brand of customer service, which is enough to send any normal man tearing off his hair in pure frustration and dispair. That AT&T has by far the worst cell phone costumer service in America has long been known to cell phone uers in this country. Only difference is, Apple has now joined their partners at AT&T in delivering about amongst the worst 2 launches of any consumer products in the good ole US of A.

After many attempts from within iTunes, when the following happened:

1. You have the new version
2. There is a newer version 2.0 available, but when you went to get it, it errored out.

I finally googled for the direct update file, got it via torrent and installed it in a few minutes.

I should note that this was for the iPod touch 2.0 firmware, not the iPhone. Loving the upgrade though. Get yourself Crash Bandicoot Nitro 3D!

I was able to upgrade my iphone saturday morning. When I first accessed it, it said that I had the latest software, the same as what happened in the article. However, I clicked on sync (I don't do the auto sync) and the upgrade process started. It finished without any glitches.

One thing you do need to do is to upgrade your itunes first. I did a couple of day prior.

Guess what? All this activation stuff will be forgotten by next weekend and 90% of the people won't even remember it happened. It's not that big a deal. Nobody died. Truth is, nobody was forced to wait in line. That was of your own choosing. Sometimes being early isn't always the wisest thing to do.

In two weeks every major issue with the iPhone firmware should be sorted out and life will go on as usual and the lucky ones will have a fine handset to use while others look on in envy. Best wishes to all new iPhone owners. You've weathered the storm and nothing but clear skies ahead. Just ignore the iPhone haters and the jealous who can't afford an iPhone. That's their problem, not yours.
