For listening to any radio stream you can play in iTunes (npr, sports, news, etc.), you can use ooTunes to stream those to your iphone.

down allRadio (visuaRadio) from the Apple store, it contains more than 2000 international radio with a nice sound quality

I added this application to my IPOD Touch yesterday. I have not spent enough connection time to evaluate the affect on battery life. However, the the sound quality is excellent. And, the functionality is just as easy as the Internet version I have enjoyed for years.
