What can they possibly do?

The key is delivering something that makes the platform stand out and quite honestly, MS has failed on every count (Vista, DirectX 10, etc)to bring a new experience to PC gaming. Any serious PC gamer is running XP and DirectX 9 which are both several years old at this point.

So, when you add in how well the 360 is doing, you have to wonder if MS has any motivation at this point to improve the platform for gaming?

So, if MS isn't motivated, then how would the others be able to deliver anything of significance?

Pc gaming is very expensive

It costs a lot of money to play a new pc game. I can buy a $300 xbox 360 but can't afford a gaming pc. Games need to be developed in a way that puts substance over graphics, so that people like me with 4 year old pc's can still play them. Pc game sales would jump!

too little too late

As a PC gamer for the last 10 years, Vista has for me put the nail in the proverbial coffin. Although the pressure to upgrade your PC on a regular basis has always existed, I steadfastly refuse to buy another PC and to suffer the indignity of running said operating system (as an IT professional I find it simply too annoying).

I also own consoles and today my main computer is a Macbook, which although not designed as a games machine, is perfectly capable of playing the few games I play regularly. So from my personal perspective PC Gaming is already dead.
