Blu-ray may be on the verge of defeating HD DVD, but that doesn't necessarily mean you have a green light to buy a player.

Web sites launch all the time, but they also shut their doors. We highlight 15 that bit the dust this year.
Let the debate begin: Was the iPhone more important than iTunes? Was anything bigger than Google finding a great business model? CNET offers its list of the 10 most important stories of the '00s.
I figure the High Definition DVDs cost $15 each and I got a terrific up-converting DVD player for free.
Most HD DVDs are regular DVD on one side and HD on the other, so if HD DVD doesn't make it as a format, I can still play the disks on a Blu-Ray or standard DVD player. Sony has wound up orphaning so many formats over the years that I'll wait a very long time before buying into another Sony dead end - Blu-Ray disks won't play on standard or HD DVD players.

Games are incredible, and recent movies like Spiderman 3 that were made with HD in mind look amazing. Wish I had a bigger TV, but no room for it. Delighted (but not surprised) that it will update to 2.0 spec.
It would be nice if the DVD remote were IR, but I like the $19.95 BDR bluetooth remote. Disks load and eject quickly, playback can start in 30 seconds or so... I don't feel that it's especially slow compared to most SD DVD players.
I waited, then bought the PS3 in January. Haven't touched the XBOX 360 since. I'm not a Sony Fanboy, but I seem to be heading that way, (Sony receiver with XBR HDMI control setup, etc. etc. etc.)

Red Ray multi-layered disk have the capacity of the other formats with the benefit of backward compatibility with you current DVDs and CDs and being cheaper to manufacturer.
My mother always said there are two sides to a story and then the truth.

a 20Gb PS3 a month after it came out for $499. Incredible value for BD player
that happens to rock (literally) pretty good games. Each firmware update from
Sony adds more and more features, increasing the value.

competition, Blu-Ray can start making some profit on their very expensive
technology apparatus. I would expect the price of Blu-Ray players go up.

1. Picture in picture hardly renders older BD players 'obsolete'. Profile 1.1 merely adds more functionality to a DVD's extras. Newer movies and all their extras will still play on a profile 1.0 player.
2. With my 61" screen the difference between a high definition image and a standard definition image is striking.
3. All I really care about is that some of my favourite movies are on BD. 450 movies is more than enough for me to choose from.
4. After two months of BD and HD-DVD viewing, during whivch time I've bought about ten BDs or HD-DVDs I've yet to have a single disc/player incompatibility issue.
5. For me, price is not an issue. Seeing my favourite movies in hi-def is.
Finally, the PS3 may be a great BD player, but unlike my duo-HD player it can't play HD-DVD discs. My machine can play any high definition DVD - BD or HD-DVD that I put in it.

Recent survey <http://www.usatoday.com/tech/products/2008-02-04-blu-ray-format-war_N.htm?csp=34> for instance suggests no compelling reason for any hi-def media format at this time.
BluRay hasn't 'won' - it just hasn't died yet either...

- I have a 40gb Sony Playstation3 and it is great; it has awsome graphics and is great at DVD and Blu-Ray playback. Also the updates from Sony add many new features each time. As long as they don't end up like Apple and stop releasing updates it will be a great system.
