Comments on: Google's Android not an iPhone

Google and Apple, close friends and partners in many areas, could be competing for the attention of smartphone shoppers next year even though they have different priorities.

Eric Schmidt Should Resign from Apple Board
by rajeev415 November 5, 2007 7:44 PM PST
Fully agree with the article. Apple should not allow Eric Schmidt to
be privy to future product developments and insights, only to have
Google compete with the iPhone.

I agree that the only thing they have in common is five letters.

They're not competing. Apple's marketing is targeted at a specific group of people who want an iPod, Phone, camera, e-mail, and internet all in one device. Google is going for the lower end market where people want a cheap phone that lets them go on the internet a little and do some searches.

I think the main goal here is to kill Microsoft and allow Google to gain more control over how people access the internet through their cell phones. In developing countries, the cell phone is going to be the first device they own, and that's going to be how they're introduced to the internet. And Google wants them to know who Google is and why their services are so great. Think of how awful it would be if all the new phones had a version of MS Windows on it. That would just be sad. Plus they are helping develop a commonly used open platform for businesses to develop on.

I think it's only a logical choice for Google to make to create this platform. Apple sells actual hardware and designs their own software. Google isn't selling any hardware. They're just giving away software. And if anything they're trying to make everything cheaper for the consumer by offering them the option to watch a few ads on their phone to lower their monthly cell phone bill. Everyone walks away happy. Even me and my iPhone. :)
Just maybe

Maybe Apple needs Google more than Google needs Apple. Maybe Google should ask him to go, he could put the breaks on the gPhone... mmm..

The sin of omission.

RIM is the biggest seller of smartphones in the US, they sit atop the pile, how could their name and OS be worthy of 1 mention while others like Symbian and Palm, get several mentions? It really defies logic to talk about smartphone OSs and barely reference the biggest and arguably best smartphone OS/Device maker in the game. There is a reason for this, I am just not sure what it is, but I dont think it was forgetfulness.

android iPhone

"So this time next year, are we going to be talking about the looming showdown between Google and Apple in mobile computing, or"

or the iPhone running android instead of osx...
or the iPhone incorporating android features
there isn't going to be any "looming showdown" this is a very dynamic market.

Android & Windows Mobile Up the Competition
by BabyDriver December 24, 2007 11:21 AM PST
The issue isn't whether it's an iPhone or not. It's the fact that other major tech players are entering the mobile phone arena, a phenom highlighted by such web postings as http://www.androidvswindowsmobile.com. Competition will quickly improve features and service and lower prices. It'll be good for us all.

"One nice development is that we can stop calling the damn thing the Gphone, which stopped being cute awhile ago in the fine tradition of J-Lo, A-Rod, and K-Fed. "

like putting "i" in front of a product isn't ridiculously lame and passe these days? c'mon apple, aren't you supposed to be hip? iPhone, iMac, iPod...jesus, come up with something new. iAmBored.
