DVR on the Xbox 360 since launch
by zgreenwell August 2, 2007 11:29 AM PDT
This function has been available on the Xbox 360 since the system launch with the addition of a media center PC. I know the not everyone the has a Xbox 360 has Media Center, but if they want TV Recording on their 360 they have the option (in the US right now!). I personally use this functionality all the time and I love it!

Why are we calling this Tivo?
by TheyCallMeGeorge August 3, 2007 11:05 AM PDT
Seriously, Tivo? I thought that the writers AND the readers of this site knew better than that. I would expect tech-stupid people to use Tivo as a blanket term for DVRs, but not CNET. There is little evidence supporting the idea of Sony actually partnering with Tivo to add DVR functionality to the PS3, but they have every reason to just create their own DVR technology. For crying out loud, please use the proper terminology.

Why not TiVo?
by bliq August 3, 2007 4:14 PM PDT
It's a testament to how TiVo has totally owned the DVR space in terms of innovation and user loyalty, if not in total installed units. "TiVo" has become part of the lexicon to describe what TiVos do. Just like everyone knows a Kleenex is just tissue paper...

Because TiVo is TiVo's, not Sony's

They own the name, they've built its intrinsic image value. TiVo the company should have the right to expect that supposedly informed media outlets respect its proper usage, instead of having those same outlets play the role of lazy idiot and apply its usage however they see fit.

It would be a fantastic idea for Sony to include DVR technology in the PS3 package. I am not a gamer and paying over $500 for a Blu-Ray player that will not accept Sony remote control to go with the rest of my Sony equipment is not realistic. I specifically miss the TIVO software that was available when I had DirecTV. Now that I have 5 cable DVRs available, the idea of Sony developing a proprietary software to do the same thing thing is not a big draw. I specifically miss the ability to do wish lists and "look for" record preferences that only TIVO has provided.

If the HD format wars were over and Blu-Ray an official winner I would have more interest. Unfortunately, although I have accumulated lots of Sony stuff over the years (including the original Walkman) I know that they take an eccentric proprietary aproach to things like inventing the MemoryStick to compete with SD cards. They are incredibly stubborn, so if they do not Win for format wars, the war will go on forever. There's not much incentive for me to buy any Hi-Def DVD format when I have an existing datbase of nearly 2000 regular dvds. I lucked out when I bet against Sony and bought an RCA VHS Recorder in 1978. There is no incentive to make any decision now because regular DVD remains a viable alternative until one HD format dominates.

I also have numerous other disparate bits of technology like digital audio collections and streaming video equipment, and a PDA/Cellphone. Sometimes it's just too complicated for this aging BabyBoomer.

When Sony has completed integrating all those elements into the PS3 (or by then the PS4 or PS5) *I* will have an incentive to get one unit that combines all those elements and simplifies my life.

The sooner, the better.

How would this work?
by Silt524 August 5, 2007 10:39 PM PDT
Does anyone know how this would work? I'm not very familiar with DVR/Tivo. Would this be a firmware update or an actual piece of hardware? Would be it something built into new systems only or would it be something you could buy seperately. I think it sounds like a great idea. I have been planning on buying a PS3 in the near future but if this is something that will only be on newer models then I will probably wait.
