Neither format is going to enjoy a full life cycle
by OSUNines July 9, 2007 6:37 PM PDT
It really doesn't matter who wins this war over the next 2 years because the whole technology is becoming obsolete. Video on demand or internet downloads of movies will replace a physical medium in the next 3 years. It happened with music over the last 3-4 years and the video coversion rate will be much faster. My wife and I have more than 500 DVD's yet we haven't bought one in the last 12 months do to VOD and downloading.

Why blu-ray will still be here in 3 years.
by brandonh33 July 9, 2007 6:51 PM PDT
I also agree with you to some extent. a lot of video programming will be bought over sights like itunes. the problem is, to screen 1080p over the internet is almost impossible today and as far as internet speed, i dont see comcast speeding up too much, there is only so much you can do with cable. But in 3 years if you dont have hi def i bet you will download all your "low-def" movies to your computer. I just dont see physical movies on disks dissappearing in the next 5-10 years, and even then they will still be there, but with very low sales.

Let me get this straight...

So, in WWII, Hitler invaded Russia and started off with sweeping success. Therefore, by the logic of this article, early success = assured victory. Yet we all know how the war turned out, that was the beginning of the end of Hitler.

In 2006, hurricane season started out early with tropical storm Alberto. By the logic of this article, early storms = active hurricane season. Yet we all know how the 2006 hurricane season turned out, very few hurricanes all season long.

To say anything is assured is stupid. Time and time and time again, what is "assured" was not. Another example, in 1975, Newsweek publish an article talking about how certain scientists were that something had to be done about global cooling. Yet we all know how warm it is today. We look back now and say "they were stupid".

Hi def disc sales are very low. Most people are waiting for a dual player, like the one Samsung has coming out very soon. If it sells well, HD DVD or Blu-Ray ain't going anywhere.

Dual Format
by Starfires July 10, 2007 1:50 AM PDT
This is my argument. We have high capacity (Blue Ray) vs lower capacity at a lower price (HD-DVD). But most people just want some hi-def content that they can buy or rent- they are holding back because it is too expensive now compared to DVD and they want to be able to play any disk they like. Which is 'better' doesn't matter when they can have such similar picture quality. Even if one kind of disk does eventually die out, the other will probably be played on a dual-format player as there will be so many disks of each format in circulation.

With electronics after about a year it becomes fairly easy to predict what awaits for the product.

an apology??!?
by enrobriaffej July 9, 2007 7:16 PM PDT
thats funny. and i have yahoo'd/googled it, so you and i both should know
that hd dvd leads all stand alone :) player sales period. and blu ray led march,
april and may of 07 of disc sales. HD DVD the rest! Im still skeptically going
to buy a blu ray player probably eventually (only because i just dont see sony
studios putting out any on hd dvd). but i have done a side by side
comparison on my 1080p tv and initially hd bested quality! even with the
samsung 1080p vs the toshiba 1080i! I am BS'ing not! recently i haven't
tried again, but that reason alone was why i went HDDVD, and microsofts
name helped, not to mention sony's bad track record. the first six months of
blu rays just didnt compare to hddvds im 'told' its the coding they were
using...and not space but i dunno. If im wrong in the long run oh well, out of
1000's of friends, co-workers, family/extended familly, etc. I do not know
anyone with either player. but i have a buying problem. ....yea....i can
imagine that if i had a blu ray player id support both, maybe. we will see
probably later rather than sooner. check out my first post on this top down
at the bottom, there is alot of news both ways, BB, amazon, WB, PS3,
XBOX360, too bad apple doesn't have their own propreitary product im sure
it'd be pretty

Good for you!

I am glad you are getting a bd! i recommend just getting a ps3, much cheaper and exacly the same. And yes hd-dvd led up to feb. of this year from my research, but you can see a steady increase in bd sells while the hd-dvd sales havent been looking to promising. And just so you know i have an HD-DVD player. The pictures are identical, the thing is, as far as movies in the next 5 years, bd and hd will preform exacly the same. they contain the same amount of pixals, same amount of frames, everything. But when you go into gaming, blu-ray just makes so much more sence. the format has been proven to be modified so that you do not lose any quality, and have 300gb on one disk. unlike movies, games will go over the 25gb limit of hd-dvd. that is why i support bd.

yea im selling the 360
by enrobriaffej July 9, 2007 7:43 PM PDT
while 360 is a cooler console im selling it, apparantly its impossible to have a
job, school, gf, life and still have time to play games in my free time. id rather
watch movies. if u do have both (ur profile indicates otherwise) then you
would know about the difference in quality in the first 6 maybe 3 months of
discs!!! blu ray just wasnt ready to unveil itself! trainning day was a great
show of that. a new test id like to do would be w/ 300, although in the
theaters there is very noticeable grain. ps3 just isn't for me. im planning on
the universal player. w/ the hd in bedroom. i imagine by xmas toshiba will
be back in the lead w/ discs! if they aren't, probably wont again unless
something BIG happens.

Blue-Ray VS HD-DVD
by bear740 July 11, 2007 7:37 PM PDT
Ken Pierce at Pixel perfect productions bases Blue-Ray's to win the battle on how many movie companies are using one or the other or both. He leaves out the most important one of all that will actually be the true test of who will win and right now the Porno industry is going towards HD-DVD mainly because of most people will have them in their homes because of the huge price difference. As with Beta vs VCR, Sony lost to the Porno companies then and now.

The funniest part about this post is, when many of the porn studios were originally with Blu-Ray, most HD-DVD supporters pointed out the fact that the internet didn't exist in the late 70's as we know it today. Much cheaper, faster, and more private to get it online.

Not only that, but Blu-ray players are now outselling HD-DVD players thanks to the PS3 trojan horse. So as the market share grows bigger for BRD, we'll see how long most of the porn companies maintain any mild exclusivity.
