Blu-ray wins

The news is in, and it's all over but the crying and the misspelling, as we see in these posts. All metrics show Blu-ray is creaming HD, despite the whining and WSJ's attempts to prop HD up. Nimnul cites the price drop on PS3s like that helps to prove his point. It does the opposite. With BR already winning, the PS3 price drop will put BR in more homes and increase BR's already sizable lead. Blockbuster has already dropped HD for BR, because some 75% of their high def rentals were BR. It's capitalism, folks. If you want to get quixotic and make BR your windmill, well, have fun, but you won't change reality. All the extra storage helps a little, but it's mostly built for the future; it's not being used yet, but it will be. The other point is, yes, the PS3. PS2 killed the competition and PS3 is compatible with PS2. Most PS2 owners will sooner or later upgrade to PS3, to retain compatibility with their large library of PS2 games. It's gonna happen. Thus, they will have a BR player by default. Will they then decide to go all HD? Nope. My $0.02, enjoy.

Sales are pathetic for both formats
by aaronwt July 9, 2007 11:41 AM PDT
Even though BD sales are beating HD DVD sales, it's still a pathetic market. Total sales for both formats since April 2006 don't even come close to the weekly DVD sales of just one mediorce DVD title. 70% of .01% of the market is crap.

Everyone here saying that HD-DVD is better just made the poor selection of buying HD-DVD. What is the main thing that we care about in disks? Memory. HD-DVD is around 25GB. Blu-ray is already 60GB. And the stuff about HD-DVD being more durable, absolutly not true. They are going to be just as durable, only blu-ray disks already have reliable burners out for bluray unlike HD DVD. Another fact, there are more blu-ray disk players out, and sales are only increasing for blu-ray players at a much faster rate then HD-DVD. Yes, in present day we will not need 60GB, but next year we will as technology becomes more demanding for space as it always has. Bluray had the potental to hold up to 300gb, while HD DVD only has a 60GB potental. Just look at the numbers and use your common sence and you will see a clear winner in this "race"

Nice to See blu-ray fans woke up

You people all need to check your facts! HD DVD players AND disks are killing blu-ray in total sales, that's with more options for both on the blu ray side. I love how every pro blu ray poster tries to agrue the necessity of the extra storage possibilities into how and why blu rays wins. Like I said earlier the facts comes down to sales! Whoever is ahead in sales is winning! As of right now Hd is ahead and has been since its inception! You people really should check your facts. And neither blu-ray nor hd-dvd will not be the movie format of our kids future! You people really should remember Microsoft is backing HDDVD!

What planet are you pulling your data from?
by extirpator July 9, 2007 7:12 PM PDT
I've seen many miss informed people, but according to the Nelson numbers (You know the people who's whole job is studying which format is selling better) it shows that Blu-ray has held a solid 2:1 lead in disc sales over HD-DVD every month since Christmas 2006. Many web sites say that HD-DVD has about 30% more dedicated players sold; however, if you put the PS3 into the picture then blu-ray has closer to a 10:1 advantage in player potential. The PS3 may not be winning the game war, but it is definitely helping blu-ray dominate the HD Disc war, as the PS3 sells on average more in one month that HD-DVD can muster up in half a year. Serious, if facts are what you want, go look them up instead of guessing incorrectly based of silly assumptions.

Why do you back up HD-DVD?
by brandonh33 July 9, 2007 4:01 PM PDT
O please, the only person that talks like that is a sales representative for HD-DVD, or some stuck up nerd who thinks whatever he has is best. There WERE more sales for HD-DVD because it came out early. There are far more Blu-ray disk players out on the market, and if you were knowledgable you would look at this quarter sales for the two disks, blu-ray disk is up 50% in sales over HD-DVD. And look at the pie chart, its clear that there will always be far more studios with blu-ray disk. I am not saying that HD-DVD will not disappear, but if you look up any comparison site you can see that hd sales have obviosly took a turn for the worst, while blu-ray disks are at a steady rise with no signs of slipping. So these nerds need to stop just taking names and start looking at the numbers. Studios are going to have a much larger impact then microsoft can. And by the way i love Microsoft, they were just put in a tight corner because sony already reserved the rights to blu-ray for the ps3.

NO ONE KNOWS YET DUMB ASS

Your posting on a tech blog website; a linked website at that, more than likely
because of the site editors realization of its negligence and its triviality.
Those sales figures your mentioning, maybe you should look them up
yourself because your breath reaks of lies. And please, dont even mention
the before mentioned article having any relevance to one side leading the
other in player or disc sales, maybe instead of looking at the pretty picture
you should try reading those things below it, called words. ' Left to right, top
to bottom, group words together to make sentences. Take tylenol for any
headaches, midol for any cramps.' And just because the BR markut is over
flooded with overpriced, unsellable players OBVIOUSLY doesn't mean they
have sold any more! try hddvdblog.com another supposed middle site just
like the others i mentioned below. just because the last 3 months more blu
ray discs(ONLY) were sold than hddvd discs. Doesn't mean a thing since
Toshiba has already won the past year.

Now thats funny stuff
by brandonh33 July 9, 2007 6:18 PM PDT
Calm down! Sorry to make you upset that your xbox 360 and hd-dvd player will be outdated in 1-2 years. You dont have to start freaking out about it though. i read the artical, i researched sales because i at first was sceptical that blu-ray has supposedly already won. and i found on several different offical sights sales of both the disks and other info about the competition and once you put everything to gether it becomes pretty obvious who is in the lead now, and that is blu-ray. Try google. I think you'll be surprised. I think an apology would be apropriate.

Neither format is going to enjoy a full life cycle
by OSUNines July 9, 2007 6:37 PM PDT
It really doesn't matter who wins this war over the next 2 years because the whole technology is becoming obsolete. Video on demand or internet downloads of movies will replace a physical medium in the next 3 years. It happened with music over the last 3-4 years and the video coversion rate will be much faster. My wife and I have more than 500 DVD's yet we haven't bought one in the last 12 months do to VOD and downloading.
