Comments on: Hate your cable box? Maybe you need Moxi

Digeo stopped by the CNET offices to give a demo of the upcoming Moxi HD DVR, and we were mostly impressed with what we saw.

have moxi, recommend against
by kokes81 June 27, 2007 6:23 PM PDT
I live in Pasadena, CA and have a Moxi box through Charter Cable. I hate it and am considering switching to Dish partly because this is the only HD cable box that Charter offers. While the interface is kind of slick, it can be agonizingly slow to move around channels, switch to DVR'd programs, or OnDemand, etc. I have other gripes but this is by far the biggest.
However, if it is in fact true that the new ones are in fact quite quick as the article mentions I would give it another chance.

Moxi 4.1 is much improved
by MoxiMessenger July 2, 2007 3:55 PM PDT
I'm sorry to hear you have had a frustrating experience, kokes81. As sonicad mentions, we have recently deployed an update to our Moxi software to many of our cable subscribers that much improves the speed and performance of the Moxi Menu. Most of the posters in AVS Forum (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=10786893&&#post10786893) and Moxi Forum (http://forums.moxi.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=238) who have gotten the update have raved about its speed and new features.

Since you are in Pasadena, maybe you will consider joining us for our next stop on our Meet Moxi tour in southern California and see the new retail version for yourself. I think you will like what you see :-)
4.1 software upgrade
by SonicAD June 27, 2007 6:31 PM PDT
I read somewhere that Charter should have the upgraded software out to Moxis in their system sometime next month... I already got it a couple weeks ago, and it's significantly faster, pretty much every problem I had with it before has been fixed... AND it now has support for an external HD, so I'm gonna pick up a big one soon so I can store a bunch more programming.

I've had a Moxi Box for more than a year and...

I love it. Its a damn shame that my cable company Comcast no longer gives them out here in Colorado Springs. I now prey my Moxi lives forever.

No big deal
by i_am_still_wade June 29, 2007 6:53 AM PDT
My SA 8300 HD already supports eSATA for expanded space. Plus, thanks to FCC mandates, is required to have working FireWire support so I transfer my HD shows to a DVD. Does Moxi have working FireWire? A 8.6 GB DVD is good enough for about an 1 hour and 15 minutes in MPEG-2. I mostly save my favorite CSI episodes. However, I'm still working on converting the movies to VC-1 so that I can fit a full length movie on a DVD.

Moxi is crap!
by wanker1011 June 29, 2007 10:38 AM PDT
I have had a Motorola Moxi box from Time Warner in LA (what used to be Adelphia) for almost 2 years and it is worthless. The interface looks exactly like the one shown in this article but it is painfully slow to navigate through - my old TiVo Series 2 in my bedroom is 10x better (but not HD obviously).

Also, this crappy box only holds 10 hours of HD! The new boxes from Time Warner hold 3x times that I haven't been able to get them to give me on.

Anybody else have luck with this?

Retail Moxi has much larger HD
by MoxiMessenger July 2, 2007 4:03 PM PDT
It's true the Moxi boxes provided by cable providers have limited hard drives (160 GB is largest) however, the retail boxes will have substantially larger hard drives as well as support external hard drives up to 1TB.

As mentioned elsewhere, the speed and performance has been greatly improved with our 4.1 upgrade, which we are hoping TW will deploy in the LA area. In the meantime, consider reading some of the reviews on 4.1 or checking out the LA stop on the Meet Moxi tour to see the new retail product for yourself. Would love to hear your feedback once you have seen it in person.
Love my Moxi
by JustinGN July 1, 2007 10:24 AM PDT
I absolutely love my Moxi Box, though it's a shame that the hardware supplied
by Charter is consistently faulty. Still, the interface is great, and from what I saw
at CES 2007 (I got to attend this year, first time ever.), I'm eagerly waiting for
their new boxes this year. Assuming the price is right, my mom's TiVO may be
hitting eBay or moved to my brother's room by year end as we replace it and our
rental boxes with purchased units.
