Comments on: Down with reflective screens

More TVs and laptop displays are equipped with glossy screens designed to enhance brightness and contrast--but are they worth the dramatically increased reflectivity?

Complaints are nice but what's the solution?

Does anybody know of any sort of reflective filter that will go over a reflective lcd or crt that will take care of this?

Thumbs Down on Reflective Screens!
by DouginSC June 29, 2007 6:18 PM PDT
I have been surprised for years that TV showrooms in most retailers display models with store reflections sometimes so bright that you have to move to one side or the other just to see the picture. When I bought my large Sony HDTV several years ago I bought the higher-end model purely because it had stonger ant-refective coating from the other models (and actually said so in the sales brochures). Now I can leave on the light beside the sofa and hardly see it reflected in the TV. ...and when the room is dark the black level is as good as it gets either way. So I vote for matte finish every time.

Retail Stores
by slappie July 4, 2007 7:16 AM PDT
All retail outlets including bestbuy, circuit city, etc... only stock the reflective screen models. My wife was pissed when she had to wait 3 weeks for shipping because the store models all had that HORRIBLE REFLECTIVE SCREEN! A little bit of light makes it look like a mirror, just so they can squeeze a slightly better contrast? Whose dumba$$ idea was that?

No to Reflective Screen

Reflective Screen - Not so much an idea but a torture. Please, I've been staying away from Sony LCD screens for years. These companies must really dislike their customers.

Reflective Screens...WHY do this to us
by peacetravels July 4, 2007 11:55 AM PDT
Whoever came up with the reflective screens needs to be forced to use them. WHY? The non glare can be seen from all angles and worked great in low light or bright light. I delayed as long as possible but finally had to buy a new laptop...and couldn't find anything without the reflective screen. At least give us a choice. I know some gamers like the bright colors but if there is any light in the room at all, it's difficult to see. My question too is... so what can we do about it now? Give us an option. I have a 17" screen...are there glare screens that we can get? We used to do that years and years ago with the first CRT's...so why are we going backwards? No to reflective screens. Bright colors are nice but no to glare.

Well, I like 'em

Personally, I'm more bothered by the way the matte screen on my 3-year-old
Powerbook seems to wash out in brighter surroundings. I love the sharp
appearance and contrast on my MacBook's screen. Viva la difference!

I like reflective screens because I can use them as a mirror for shaving and admiring myself.

Reflective Screens Suck!
by dunkowski July 5, 2007 3:51 PM PDT
In my opinion I wouldn't buy anything with a reflective screen, a reflective screen is a deal breaker no matter how good of a sale it is. Why TV and laptop manufacturers can't see how irritating and distracting a reflective screen is, is beyond me.

...because of its non-reflective screen. I'm a professional photographer and find I can't edit properly using a reflective display.

Wrong--Glossy screens are actually seeable outside
by AlanHub July 9, 2007 5:57 PM PDT
I have both a matte mac and a glossy Qosmio... trust me i know hand in hand
with glare. First off, if you have a light source that is too bright in the room or if
you are sitting outside, the light travels on the little crevices of the matt screen
causing the screen to be almost completely washed out with light... and it is
literally unseeable unless you are in the shade. While a glossy screen reflects the
light back into the room, so the light does not stay on the screen. Thus causing
a glossy screen to be legible.
