New Costco Return Policy Inevitable

As a minister and tecno-geek I officiate at many weddings and I am always observant of the photo and video technology brought by both guests and hired vendors. I often inquire about the high-tech digital cameras, SLRs, or video cameras in the hands of their owners. On more than a couple of occasions the owners knew little about the device because they had purchased it within the past week at Costco. Their unabashed intention was to return it for a refund after the wedding. I'm sure behavior like this has prompted Costco's retreat on their return policy. Too bad for the rest of us who view this conduct for what it is: Dishonest.

One thing about Costco remains true and that is if you purchase something there you will rarely have buyer's remorse because you found the item cheaper somewhere else.

Bad Costco

It's my opinion the new return policy on electronics will hurt Costco's bottom line more than any losses incurred with the prior ?no questions asked? return policy. I also believe that this new return policy will directly affect Costco's cash cow from membership dues.

Now that Costco offers nothing more than other retailers when I consider purchasing big ticket items such as plasma TVs, audio equipment, computers, and other large ticket items,, I will definitely shop around and most likely purchase them somewhere other than Costco. This is because Costco?s electronics prices usually were not the lowest that could be found. Still, with the feeling that I was covered beyond the 1 or 2 year manufacturer's warranty, I always purchased from Costco because I felt that it was the best deal and worth the extra money. Consequently, now that I am not going to purchase as much from Costco anymore, I will also be downgrading my membership from Executive to the regular membership status and dues.

Customer loyalty is something every retailer is desperate to get and keep. Costco had this type of customer base but now with this new announcement, I think Costco basically severed that loyalty with many of it?s customers and opened the doors and opportunities for the competition.

Blame the people who abuse the return policy

Then shop around for the best prices. Blame all those people who buy products
and use it for a couple of days or weeks and then return it. People think it's a
free rental and it's not free. People should stop abusing these return policy of
all the stores. I would love a Zero return Policy unless the item is defective or
broken within the 1st week. Make sure you want it before your buy or don't buy
it at all.

Two months ago, the lamp on my Costco bought Rear Projection TV quitted 2 weeks short of its warranty. After waiting for more than 3 weeks and numerous phone calls for the 3rd party warranty provider to come up with a service tech. Costco authorized the OEM's service center to get it fixed and reimbursed me the whole bill which worth close to 30% of the purchase price of the TV. And they also gave me the option of returning the TV. I know for a fact that for the same price of a 50" a year ago, I can get a 60" from them. But I am not greedy, it doesn't worth my hassle to move a big TV in & out of my house. I am happy that Costco honour their warranty. It's the 3rd party warranty provider that you have to look out for.
