by ridgerock January 9, 2007 7:54 PM PST
One problem you will only be able to call other ifonez it wont work with any other network or carriers you wont be able to copy your itunez to it whether from your computer or ipod nobody's software will work on it. Oh and you will only be able get calls from other ifonez. Not to mention it will break precisely the day after it's 60 day warranty runs out and you will loose all the songs you now had to pay twice for and pay agian when you idiots buy another ifone. It is so wounderful Steve Blo Jobs could not show us useing the device so he made a low rent cartoon in an auditorium fill with employees under threat of termination if they dont cheer. Lovely

Glossy screen = Face Smudge and finger prints
by Chill05 January 9, 2007 7:58 PM PST
I guess iPod is following Sony's example and setting an absurd price to separate itself from the pack, but I believe I can get a an mp3/phone/video player (3G) for under $200 with a contract. Shoot I can get that w/o a contract plus qwerty keyboard and an OS. Wait, what am I talking....Oh sorry, I forgot iPod products are not for the technology informed. There for the trendy-consumers not too concerned with technology; just get me something cool.
Oh yeah, iPhone is great, and it comes with the network that has the fewest dropped calls.

Light years!
by i,Jimbot January 9, 2007 7:58 PM PST
As usual with Apple products, they have done it right. This phone is light years
ahead of anything on the market. I currently use a Treo, but that will be going
away after I pick up my iPhone in June. The only negative I see is the storage
size. Those complaining about the price need to compare it to what's out there.
You pay for quality, friends.

Light years away from my phone 3 years ago...
by AlexGreatMK January 9, 2007 8:28 PM PST
First of all, "as usual with Apple products, they have done it right" is a false statement... try the first generation of Intel Apple Mac Books or iPods... they were all revolutionary, but compared to their 3 months later versions, they all sucked royally... so chances are, this will suck as well until they get some user feedback and fix all faults that will be uncovered by extended use... so buying this phone right now is a very risky business...

As for light years away from everything... have you seen Nokia N95? iPhone doesn't have GPS, G3, the camera sucks, the memory is not expandable (big, but not expandable, so it is capped), the HUGE screen will be very gentle simply because the body is so thin, and lastly, touch screens haven't proven to be very easy to use... try using any device with touch screen with gloves (in winter), when you're sweaty after a ball game (in summer), during rain... Its cheaper than the Nokia N95, sure, but its definitely not "light years ahead of anything on the market" simply because is light years ahead of your obsolete Treo... I don't even see how its more advanced than the Blackberry Pearl... except the fancy huge touch screen (umm.. is this really an advantage?!)...

My 2 cents...
So why do you have a Treo?
by glacia00 January 9, 2007 10:03 PM PST
If you can toss it away for this you're not using any of the functions of the Treo that the iphone doesn't have so why do you have it? And you'll pay 2X the price of the newest Treo. That is some zealotry.
I'll take mine with Verizon

I'll take mine with Verizon!
Posted by Kula Jon (See profile) - January 9, 2007 7:44 PM PST
I watched the Iphone introduction. I want one yesterday. I just hope they do a Verizon version because Cingulair sucks where I live. It also seems a bit pricey. Hopefully the price will drop after production revs up. I'm also wondering how delicate this phone will be. I work outdoors and I'm pretty rough on phones; I hope they sell a tough version! I am really impressed with the tech advances shown with this product and I have no idea why people still buy PC's.

This person says Cingular sucks beecause of coverage. Well do you think Verizon is any better? They have the same problems as the others so for you to say that just because of one spot is crazy. You need to understand that all the big carries have their share of problems to make money off of people like you. I work for Cingular and I will tell you that some things we do make me mad. But at the same time makes sense. But since you love Verizon so much, why don't you get a job with Verizon R&D and then convince their board of directors to up the cash to get cool concepts such as the iPhone or anything else. You fan boys make me sick...and by the way people by PC's because society can't afford macs like they can with pc's with the exception of the mac lunch box.

Cingular NEVER!
by rbgile January 9, 2007 8:12 PM PST
Maybe you should consider working for Verizon, UScell, anyone but Cingular/At&t. I'll grant you that they all have problems, but I've used Cingular all over the Northeast. Only Tmoble is worse than them in reception area. But at least Tmoble works overseas. I can't believe Jobs is selling exclusively through Cingular. That's the smae type of mistake he made with apple computers.
Agree with original poster
by sdnelson33 January 9, 2007 8:15 PM PST
For voice quality, coverage (REAL coverage ... not just faking it with pilot signal), roaming partners, and, what I like most, EvDO to which the shoddy GSM/GPRS/EDGE network doesn't stand a chance (forget about equivalent coverage in HSDPA for what will likely be years). So what if the iPhone isn't on Verizon and Sprint now. When it is, I'll be able to actually download from iTunes which will still for the most part be just be a twinkle in Cingular's eyes.
I don't blame you...........
by Jude526 January 9, 2007 8:25 PM PST
I left Qwest to go with Verizon and Verizon is the best by far. I also work for a Verizon agent. Nothing is perfect in this world, but Verizon does surpass them all in my opinion. My brother is with Cingular and he
is going to switch when his contract is over. But now about the iPhone. No price is worth it if a phone doesn't work properly. It needs to be out for awhile......
Make mine a Verizon too.
by rouse51 January 9, 2007 8:50 PM PST
I will take mine with Verizon also. As a person that travels a lot across the country in my line of work, I would have to agree with the statement cingular sucks. It was my first service and I had bad reception in a lot of areas. Alltel was also horrible. I followed the advice of Consumer reports and switched, I have yet to find a spot were my co-workers have better reception then me. Most of the time they are borrowing my phone to call home. I may not have roll over or 7:00 nights and weekends, what I do have is the most relaible network in America. Steve Jobs expand your phone sales.
No Sale with Cingular as service provider
by hmpierce January 9, 2007 7:59 PM PST
Apple may have created something with impressive engineering. But under no circumstances will I do business with Cingular. Jobs is really great at selling his own stuff, but demonstrates unsound business judgement lockikng this into Cingular.

On Cingular?
by rbgile January 9, 2007 8:00 PM PST
If the Iphone is only going to be avaiable on Cingular, they're crazy. I've had Cingular, and I'll never again go with them. They are constantly dropping calls, and have poor reception in many places in the northeast. Jobs must be on some kind of narcotic if he believes that Cingular is the Caddilac of internet providers. And $500 for a cell phone with only 8gig of memory? He's dreaming.

Awesome phone....but $600?
by Zclyh3 January 9, 2007 8:01 PM PST
I love all the features and it looks great...but $600? It doesn't even have a digital camera nor does it have a GPS built-in! Heck, it doesn't even have DVD-like camcorder features like the Nokia N95. The screen only buttons are great but I'm anticipating another Ipod Nano scratch situation.

I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE CASES THE MAKE FOR IT!
by Chill05 January 9, 2007 8:01 PM PST
Finally, those white bluetooth headphones can be used with a iPod w/o an adapter.

(can we stop with the 2mp cameras that can't take decent pictures unless you're outside at high noon; that gimmick is sooooo old.)

Cingular is a gastly mistake
by jrobins725 January 9, 2007 8:34 PM PST
How could Apple choose Cingular as a service provider? I cancelled my contract with Cingular and switched to Verizon and have had very few problems since. The Cingular service is so bad in my area that I will have to forgo IPhone until it is available through another telecom.

It's nice but not $600 worth.
by Rocker452 January 9, 2007 8:42 PM PST
For $600 I would expect more memory 8Gigs will fillup quick with mp3s and videos. It should also be 3G compatible for that price too. It's like all other Apple products over priced.

but it's not just about the memory
by ackmondual January 9, 2007 9:27 PM PST
Wifi, BT, EDGE, hi-res screen, colro screen, touch screen, cell phone, OSX, 2MP digicam

flash type memory IS expensive. $300 gets you a 8GB ipod Nano. For x2 the money, you're getting a the improved attributes for the screen mentioned above, LOTS of WL options, an actual PC (... or a Mac to be technical). If this performs as well in reality as it does on paper, it could be a steal.

HOwever, Apple ain't the only one to offer great products in the "NOT priced to move" category. Tiger Gizmondo, Tapwave Zodiac, various Sony Clie, Sega Dreamcast, BetaMax, etc. For sure Apple's brand name reputation will go far for the iPhone, and cell phone are hugely popular. I know high end cell phones (in functionality, not the $100 that cost 10x as much b/c it's laced with 24K gold and diamonds) can go up to $800. If ppl really do go for those as much as luxury cars are sought after, they'll be OK. Else, that sure ain't no impulse buy. It's gonna be a hard sell... even after price cuts.

Same problem as with other Apple products...
by twc22 January 9, 2007 9:03 PM PST
As great as this looks and seems to work, etc...I have the same problem with it as I do with Apple computers, I'm a Businessperson and Businesses and companies use Microsoft. Period. Unless you work FOR Apple or some small company, you're using Microsoft at work--and for those of us that do some work at home the iPod is the only Apple product worth the trouble. Will the iPhone work on my corporate server ala Blackberry? Will it sync to my MS Outlook email at home and at work? Will it view, edit, save Excel and Word Docs like the BlackJack or Q? In an ideal world maybe...

Interesting phone/ipod combo. Is it worth it?
by wpavlik2 January 9, 2007 9:29 PM PST
While I was watching CNN's report on the new iPhone, it was mentioned that it really harkened back to the days of the release of the first Newton.
Now, I remember when those first came out. This doesn't remind me of the Newton. It's SOOO MUCH sweeter!
Now, I have a 60 gig video iPod, and a Treo phone.
I resisted the Treo for a LONG time. I like the idea of the iPhone but I think the limited memory will be a problem for me and a lot of others who are pack rats.
I will have to swing by my local Cingular store and see one in person.

Big, Small Capacity, Big $
by glacia00 January 9, 2007 9:51 PM PST
Not that I was waiting for it but this isn't what I
expected and certainly hope this isn't a direction other phones go. Touchscreens are good only for devices where your attention has to be on the device. Phones and remotes for instance are almost exclusively eyes elsewhere devices and people operate them by feel more often than not.

8gigs is not a video device so for what it can do this thing is really a monster size for a phone. And with a screen that size there's no useful purpose for having the audio I/O on the same side so why make people smoosh their face on the screen?

Why is Apple obsessed with not letting you change the battery?

And $600? That prices out the annoying guy from their Mac v. PC ads and everyone like him. I've watched some tall tales being spun by people to get their parents to buy them a $2000 Mac but a $600 phone is going to take a whole new level of convincing.

I JUST LOVE THE PHONE !!!
by hector a January 9, 2007 9:56 PM PST
WHERE DO I BEGIN, The design, the touch screen, 2 megapixels camera, video, photos, music, internet, wifi, just love the thing, ohh and did I mention it is a phone??? plus 8 gb is great considering my old w600 has only 256mb of internal memory, with this phone you don't have to wrestle with memory sticks or sd cards, love the phone, will get it as soon its available.

I'm absolutely LOVING it!

What else can you expect from Apple but the greatest stuff possible. I truly can not wait to get my hands on one, a true smart phone...they should call it the Itelligent Phone. ps/I just patented that...lol! They have leaped so far ahead of the competition that new phones now seem prehistoric. Way to go Apple, back to the drawing board smart phones.
